JOB SUMMARY:
The Anaesthesiologist on the Flying Eye Hospital is responsible for
administering general and local anaesthesia to patients. S/he teaches
anaesthesia and recovery procedures and theory to local doctors and
nurses. S/he is also responsible for crew health matters and for all
anaesthetic drugs and equipment. S/he works in collaboration with
designated nursing staff to fulfil duties.
REPORTS TO: Flying Eye Hospital (FEH) Medical Director
SUPERVISES: Designated Nursing Staff
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Evaluate and approve recommended patients by the medical team for
potential surgery, and incorporate the information into the ORBIS
computer/patient record database.
2. Administer local and general anaesthesia to surgical patients and
monitor vital signs. Manage patients' emergence and recovery from
anaesthesia.
3. Oversee Anaesthesia department in collaboration with designated
nursing staff.
4. Teach general and local ophthalmic anaesthesia/recovery procedure and
theory to local doctors and nurses.
5. Assess the Local Hospital Anaesthesia setup and decide in
consultation with the FEH Medical Director whether it is appropriate for
anaesthesia for children below two (2) years of age.
6. Conduct inventory, order and maintain appropriate supply of
anaesthetic drugs and equipment in collaboration with designated nursing
staff.
7. Responsible for the accounting of narcotics and controlled
substances.
8. As delegated by the FEH Medical Director, serve as a member of the
Program Team to design, plan, implement and evaluate specific programs.
9. Oversee implementation of all medical emergency policies.
10. Function as medical advisor for team members. Advise on issues of
health, and if necessary administer medicines and vaccinations.
11. Actively participant in fundraising events and goodwill tours on and
off the FEH and represent ORBIS at FEH-related social functions.
12. Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings.
13. Comply with approved policies and procedures.
14. Assist in the daily cleaning, set-up and packing of the aircraft.
15. Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS & KNOWLEDGE:
F.R.C.A. Diploma or equivalent and current registration with the
appropriate professional institute. Knowledge of A.C.L.S. techniques,
Ophthalmic Anaesthesia and Peribulbar blocks. Willingness and ability to
travel internationally up to eight (8) months (approximately) of the
year. No significant disqualifying factors/issues which would preclude
from obtaining entry visas into any country.
SKILLS:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (verbal &
written) skills required. Computer and Internet competency (MS Word,
Excel, Access, PowerPoint, & MS Outlook). Able to interact and manage
people of diverse cultural backgrounds. Able to work effectively in a
team-driven environment. Supports a patient-centered approach to
programs, services, and systems.
