Description
- The scholarship is the result of a partnership between Abbott Laboratories S.A.
(Pty) Ltd and the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA), and will
provide R100 000 per annum to eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students,
and medical officers in the public service to further their training in
anaesthesia.
Objectives
- To raise the profile of anaesthesia among the lay and professional South
African public
- To increase awareness of the specialty among undergraduate students and
medical officers (including Community Service Medical Officers) and thus to
present it as an attractive career choice
- To attract previously disadvantaged students into the specialty and profession
- To provide support to anaesthesia registrars in training
- Generally, to contribute to an environment conducive for training in
anaesthesia
Eligibility
- The scholarship is open to all registered South African undergraduate and
postgraduate students from the eight medical schools, Community Service Medical
Officers and medical officers registered for independent practice at any public
hospital in South Africa.
- Undergraduate medical students in their clinical years of study: Scholarships
will be awarded for an elective (or equivalent) in anaesthesia
- Anaesthesia registrars at all levels of training: The scholarship may be used
to offset costs relating to examination fees, training aids, congress attendance
or clinical research. The recipient shall be obliged to become a SASA registrar
member, if not a member on application.
- Medical officers: The scholarship may be used to offset costs relating to
examinations (Diploma in Anaesthetics), courses (e.g. ACLS, APLS, ATLS),
refresher courses, study and training aids etc.
The Scholarship
- Size of award: This will be reviewed on an annual basis and is subject to
change without prior notification to prospective applicants. An amount up to and
not exceeding R5000.00 (five thousand rand only) will be offered per successful
application.
- Frequency of award: Scholarships will be awarded twice per annum in January
and June, for applications meeting the October and April deadlines respectively.
- Repeat awards: Previous recipients of this award will not generally be
reconsidered.
- Administration: Administration of the scholarship will rest in the SASA
Council AstraZeneca and Abbott Scholarship Subcommittee.

- Endorsement: All applications must be supported (in writing) by the
applicant’s Head of Department (or their delegated representative) or Dean of
Faculty
Acknowledgement / Report
All beneficiaries of the Abbott Scholarship in Anaesthesia will be required to
acknowledge in writing their receipt of the funds, and to advise the committee
on how these were utilised
In the interests of furthering education, the recipients may be required to
share their experiences, new knowledge or research activities with their
colleagues at an appropriate forum or in a SASA publication.
